Club Awards
The history of Club Awards for Barracudas Water Polo goes back to it's origin and have been celebrated at Club Funcations e.g. Season Break Up. Many Club members have been nominated and awarded in the past e.g., Phil Howden, Nat Hoitz and Emma Jackson to name a few. We continue our tradition, celebrate our awardees and incorporating the overal UQ Sports Club Awards. Furthermore, we will endevour to update past members with appropriate years on this page. Congrats on all current and past awardees.
2021/2022 Club Awards:
Junior Club Person of the Year: Zoe Smith
She has been with the club as a player for four years, she has coached and refereed for the past 2 years. Zoe upholds the Water Polo values of Think Act Play in everything she does. She referees to ensure players get fair calls and can enjoy their game. Zoe is always happy, smiling and willing to support her players and above all loves her Water Polo.
Club Spirit Award of the year: Darcy Moreland
Darcy has played for the club for several years as a Barras junior and senior representative player and in QLD Thunder. He has been a committed coach and mentor for under 14’s for several years. He has continued to be a good role model leading by example and helping with coaching when asked for other teams. The Barras v Barras U16 and U15 boys Finals plus U14 purple playing for gold this weekend is testament to his involvement. Darcy is an all-round good guy and been deservedly awarded the the Club Spirit Award.
Club Person of the Year: Björn Galjaardt (in quarantine at time of presentation)
This award goes to Bjorn, who has had a hand in many pies. Coaching, mentoring, engaging players back to Water Polo and creating great social media content. This person is meticulous with coaching, capturing stats and encouraging players to use the Think Act Play guidelines to maintain integrity in Water Polo. Bjorn has high expectations with a focus on quality relationships, good feedback to players and continuing a strong passion within the sport. He has been integral to leading the senior (student’s) engagement and competition at UQ with a great team of players.
